Bringing to light a seldom studied subject, William Baker and Jeanette Roberts Shumaker present a biography on the 'novelist's novelist,' as J.M. Barrie referred to Merrick, author of a dozen novels, nine collections of short stories, and five plays. In Leonard Merrick: A Forgotten Novelist's Novelist, in addition to an introduction outlining Merrick's life and critical reception, there are chapters on his "Early Novels," "The Middle Novels," "The Novels of the Early 1900s," "Later Novels," "Short Stories I," "Short Stories II," "Drama and Motion Pictures," and a brief "Conclusion" reassessing Merrick's acheivement. The bibliography is divided into primary materials and alphabetically arranged writings about Merrick and other work used in the monograph with a listing of films used. There is a useful index.
