This production history discusses eleven theatrical realizations of Sophocles's Electra on the American stage from 1889 to 1995. It continues conversations begun in a number of book-length studies on Greek drama on the modern, international stage.
This volume has a strong introduction. In the body of the work, in what seems to appeal to the general reader, as well as the student and scholar, the author offers "a chance to sit vicariously in the audience and enjoy eleven Electra productions," and it is in this that her intentions are fully realized. Choate has spread her net wide in the collection of sources and presented the reader with a generous helping of these, including practitioners' thoughts, critical reviews, and excellent illustrations.
