Atkins does a great service with this exrremely useful edition, which is based on the first edition of The Sonnets (1609) and offers extensive glosses after each poem. In writing his notes, the editor references mnore than 70 editions of the poems since 1710 and collates 17 scholarly editions that have appeared since Hyder Edward Rollins's New Variorum edition of the sonnets (1944). Atkins also offers an insightful running commentary on the metrical features of the individual poems, making this edition stand out even further from all other recent editions. Including a fine bibliography, a general index, and three appendixes, this lucid, well-researched edition is the product of many years of labor and love; it will be an indispensable work for those intererested in Shakespeare's sonnets. Summing Up: HIghly recommended. All readers, all levels.
