There are several other instances of such art-related fiction by Robbe-Grillet, including his collaboration with Rene Magritte entitled La Belle Captive, which Stoltzfus translated and published with an "interarts essay" in 1995. Stoltzfus does something similar here except that, in the present instance, it is Stoltzfus, as a participating reader/viewer called forth by both Robbe-Grillet's and John's work, who arranges John's art in a way that allows meaning to emerge from the encounter. In giving specific organization to the intersection of Johns and Robbe-Grillet, Stoltzfus aims to enrich our understanding of each artist's work both individually and in relation to each other. He also seeks to emphasize the contributory role of the reader/viewer in these works.
