| This book represents an investigation into one of the basic issues in the study of translation: how do we reconcile theory and practice? The main focus, in the form of close readings and think-aloud protocols in chapters 2 and 3, is on translations of two classic texts: Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and Carlo Collodi's "Le avventure di Pinocchio". The first and last chapters respectively seek to show what translation theory is and what translation practice is. Indeed, chapter 1, 'Theory and Hubris', provides a synthesis of the development of the interdiscipline of Translation Studies, with some consideration also given to the hermeneutical questions that inevitably arise when dealing with the interpretation of language.

| Iain Halliday was born in Scotland but moved to England with his family at the age of eleven. He graduated with a BA in American Studies from the University of Manchester in 1981, took an MA in the same subject in 1983, and then moved to Italy to work at the University of Catania, Sicily, as a language assistant for three years. There then followed four years working in publishing in London before he returned to Catania, where he now works teaching English at the Faculty of Languages. His interest in translation has developed over the years spent in Italy and he has worked as a professional translator, including the translation from Italian into English of several literary works discussed in this book. In 2006 he gained a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Warwick. |
